Roles

As an actor I like to expand my capabilities and show I am able to play many different characters/ types of characters. Today after we established the basic idea for our devised piece, our teacher wrote our weakest roles on the board, the roles we least play;

 In our sub-cultural community we have decided that everyone should have a role and so we should try and choose a role that fits to our least played characters. Here are my views;

Dani normally plays a very chilled, relaxed role so she is to be an energetic character; I believe she should be the community hunter. Someone who is obsessed with her job and her physicality so is always trying to keep fit, like a gym instructor may be.

Jake W needs to play a more relaxed role which is why I am against him being the hunter; some hunters may be calm however it still requires some sense of anger and severity to murder animals as a profession. Possibly could play the Gardener; not particularly camp or low than anyone else but still for filling a role that is needed within the community as every role is important.

Mr Dobinson wrote that Liam needed to be more serious, I believe this applies more to rehearsals that to his character, however Liam wants to be a blacksmith which I believe is a quite serious role, also quite powerful and talented.

Ali is said to need a bigger role however I think this all depends on how he delivers his role, I said to him if there is the possibility of a government spy then Ali should take the role as it would be a big part of the piece. Although as it is an important role and I think Ali should be given the role on merit and his contribution to the devised piece because it is a big role and I think it should be well delivered.

Connor C's note is to be more abstract, for this I am think possibly a spiritualist, with a quirky personality and unusual techniques; a firm belief in life after death and techniques of contacting the dead, possibly contacting wiser beings?

Phil needs to be more bold, I think what is meant by this is someone more set in his ways, someone with power. At the moment Phil is a guard however I think a cleaner/ clothes washer may be a better idea, an older character, someone who remembers from a boy 'the old days', 'when the government and [sub-culture] lived together'. He would be set in his ways because of the fear struck into him by the awful things that had happened and his power would derive from his age, wisdom and respected noble role in the community. Yet he would he be bold as I picture the ranting old man would tell the 'during the war' stories.

Amanda does need to play a less motherly role, in 'The Grapes of Wrath' he role was literally 'Ma'. In a community it would be difficult to find a role that requires someone not to care so much for their community however this could be made possible if she had something she more important to care for than her community to care for. The sub-culture is based on religion and it is important to the community that the culture remains in it's ways and so Amanda could be the worshiping priest, making sure that holy views are still very well respected.

My comment was after Amanda's which was to be more 'nasty'; I spoke to Mr Dobinson more about this in person and his explanation was that I always play a more likeable character who seems to help others to some extent however I know I am able to play a villian and I think it will be fun to do. When thinking I had no available role to fit a more sadistic personality then Liam straight out have me the role of Community doctor which could actually work quite well as I could manipulate the camp mates to get what I wanted and with hold medicine if I liked. To be even more sadistic, I may threaten to cut a villager with heamophillia like has been said about Hindenberge to Queen Victoria's eldest son.

Mr Dobinson said Connor R needs to be a natural leader, for this I was thinking a Chef; Head Chef's deal with people everyday and have to get what they want out of other Chefs in a big Kitchen, these skills would come more clear and better used if, in the end, there was a rise against the Government.

Steve's note was that he needs a Deep emotional Background which I think he incorporates quite well into characters anyway however this may just be because we worked closely at GCSE level. Steve, at teh moment, has the role of an old man and I believe his back story is along the lines of people he knew getting killed by the government; this could work well and I want to see how Steve develops this role.

Jake K is said to need to be more like Tom F who is an arragent, self absorbed year 11 student. Tom derives this from singing and so possibly Jake could be an entertainer however in such a sub-culture it seems like less of a job and more of a nightly hobby so possibly he could continue with his role and entertain as a hobby.

Location & Inspiration - The Sunken Courtyard

The more probable area we've looked at is Fort Amherst, more specifically, the Sunken Courtyard;

"The Sunken Courtyard: Currently part of the unrestored area of the Fort, the Sunken Courtyard is a natural amphitheatre. The barracks building at the back of the courtyard is a stunning ruin providing a spectacular backdrop for filming or theatre productions."
Taken from:"http://www.fortamherst.com/index.php/hiring-the-fort/site-hire"

As this is the most probable location we've looked at, and we should start devising soon, and so we began brain storming ideas from a variation of photos of the area;

There was plenty of ideas coming up about war and battle, which could have been expected considering the location is a Fort, however I thought it was important to move away from a piece with physical conflict as it could become very 'Year 9 Physical theatre'. One of the words that stuck out for me was 'Refugees'; we could use the Fort as a strategic defense point for an underground community that have been pushed out of society by a fascist government and found the worn down Fort as refuge. Here are further ideas we came up with steaming from this;

I think this location, as well as these ideas, has real potential and so I hope it can pick up pace and direction.

Location & Inspiration - The Three Sisters

I know the Owner of the Three Sister's pub in Rainham so I suggested we look at it for inspiration;
The Three Sisters will "welcome you to this warm family and dog friendly local, where we sell real ales and real ciders".

Once again I looked at this pub for a piece around prohibition however the idea I really ended up with could be applied to any time period; I we an opportunity for a sort of 'Cluedo' themed piece where there is a murder in a bar/speakeasy and the characters almost explain to the audience, through their own accounts, life stories and clues.

Locations & Inspiration - LV21

One of the Locations we've looked at is the LV21.

The LV21 is a "historic, 40 metre steel-hulled lightship transformed into a floating art space and performance facility."

Before we even looked at this location there was talk of 1920's America and Prohibition which when we then looked at this ship, I thought about possibly a story about bootleggers, people who would smuggle alcohol from Europe into America for illegal distribution, and than also hijackers of the ship.

The Purple Gang might be a group we could look at as they were especially violent and were responsible for over 500 deaths during the Detroit bootleg wars. Furthermore in later years a separate faction was created; 'The Little Jewish Navy' who owned several boats and participated in rum-running as well as hijacking.

Another idea I had to do with the LV21 away from the 1920's theme is a piece around the Naval Blockade of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. I think by showing a stand off between an American ship and a Russian Ship (we would only show the story of the American sailors) we can create real tensions and show panic. This was done briefly in the recent X-men movie 'X-men First Class' however I think we could expand on the events and maybe show some the key worries during the blockade which I believe lasted 5 days.

General notes

Before we start a site specific piece I think it's very important to keep in mind, especially when devising:

  • We can't take any real major pieces of set to the site so everything we really need should already be there
  • We need to find space for the audience to stand/sit on site
  • The performance will be on one location/in one specific space and so the performance need to suit that performance space. The way I think we could best perform a dramatic piece in one space would be to make it real time, i.e. if we were to perform for 30 minutes for example, we should show 30 minutes of those character's lifes
  • We need to be able to give a fairly equal role to everyone which will be even more difficult as we are devising in one big group
